Launch of the NEO-TWIN Research and Development Programme

At Smartis, informacijski sistemi d.o.o., we are participating in the research and development programme NEO-TWIN – Next-Generation Methods, Tools and Products for Innovative Diagnostics and Prognostics of Electric Vehicles Based on Digital Twins.

The programme will run until 30 June 2029.

About the programme

The main objective of the NEO-TWIN programme is to develop and demonstrate the innovative NEO-TWIN SUITE technology portfolio, which brings together next-generation methods, tools and products for innovative diagnostics and prognostics, as well as model-based control of the key powertrain systems of electric and electrified vehicles based on digital twins. The key technological impact of the NEO-TWIN programme is to achieve significant advances in the safety, sustainability and reliability of electric and electrified vehicles, which will be validated within the programme by demonstrating NEO-TWIN SUITE on batteries, electric machines, inverters and fuel cells.

NEO-TWIN SUITE comprises an on-board NEO-TWIN SUITE and a cloud-based NEO-TWIN SUITE, which are connected by an interoperable digital twin platform that provides state-of-the-art data management and cybersecurity. The on-board NEO-TWIN SUITE combines innovative and advanced physical sensors and measurement techniques with a cyber-physical system for monitoring, diagnostics and advanced model-based control. Monitoring and diagnostics rely on advanced, scalable physics-based and data-driven approaches and on innovative virtual sensors of the devices’ internal states. The cloud-based NEO-TWIN SUITE harnesses the potential of greater computing power for advanced diagnostics and prognostics.

The final results of the programme include a TRL 6 demonstration of NEO-TWIN SUITE in a real-world environment on a vessel and a working machine. During the development phases of the programme, dedicated TRL 4 NEO-TWIN SUITE demonstrators for batteries, electric machines, inverters and fuel cells will also be developed. They are carefully designed to ensure the greatest possible degree of transferability and adaptability and thus, alongside the TRL 6 demonstrators, represent key building blocks for the long-term impact of the NEO-TWIN programme.

The NEO-TWIN programme addresses social and economic impacts on several levels, ranging from significant advances in the safety, sustainability and reliability of electric and electrified vehicles to the development of a wide range of methods, tools and products with market potential. The main result of the programme is NEO-TWIN SUITE, an integrated product with great breakthrough potential that can be adapted to the needs of end users. NEO-TWIN SUITE also brings together many innovative methods, tools and products with market potential that can be marketed independently, including an interoperable digital twin platform and a secure convergence layer between OT and IT, numerous innovative sensors, and methods and tools for advanced diagnostics, prognostics and model-based control. At the same time, the methods, tools and products developed within the programme are also transferable to other vehicle components and to other sectors.

With its objectives, research approaches, technological solutions and results, the NEO-TWIN programme represents an important step towards safer, sustainable and digital mobility and further strengthens the links between science and industry.
