Reducing Carbon Footprint Through IT Solutions and Digitalisation
Companies in the IT sector have a dual role. First, we must reduce our own carbon footprint and follow sustainability standards. Even more importantly, our job is to support our clients in doing the same. GREEN STAR CERTIFICATION: MOVING FORWARD, YEAR AFTER YEAR
We are proud holders of the Green Star certificate, awarded by CER – Sustainable Business Network of which we have been members since the very beginning. There are five levels of certification, and we currently hold four. Our goal is consistent year-by-year improvement across all ESG areas: Environmental, Social and Governance.
STRATEGY FOR 2030: A CLEAR PATH TO SUSTAINABLE GROWTH
As part of the SPIRIT Slovenija, javna agencija programme, we have embarked on a sustainable circular transition, under the guidance of Prof. Dr Adriana Rejc Buhovac . The result is a transformation roadmap to 2030. Our goal is to continue evolving as a company, be mindful of key sustainability criteria and set a stronger foundation for future growth.
This year, we celebrate 16 years of operation. We have achieved a lot, but moving from a medium-sized enterprise to a larger scale requires change. With this strategy, we have defined a clear plan for how we will achieve this. This also strengthens our position as an attractive employer for young talent.
Sustainability is more than a word for us. Our strongest sustainability impact is created through our SmartTwin and Envizi solutions, which connect operational data with strategic management. The SmartTwin platform helps companies accurately monitor energy consumption and reduce costs, while Envizi integrates these data into comprehensive ESG analyses and reports. SUPPORTING YOUNG TALENT
We actively encourage the employment of women in IT, and their representation in our team has increased to 25%. We also hold a full Family-Friendly Company certificate. I currently hold the role of president of the Engineers of the Future association (Inženirke in inženirji bomo!), where we encourage young people – especially girls, but also boys – to pursue engineering careers. We want to offer opportunities for talent to develop their potential in a company like Smartis.
ENVIRONMENTAL CARE
We care for the environment through various measures. For example, we have modernised our vehicle fleet with electric cars, use green energy, and incorporate energy-efficient infrastructure into our projects. Our green data centres and new-generation hardware reduce energy consumption. We also offer clients equipment recycling through certified partners.
OUR ENERGY-OPTIMISING SOLUTIONS
Our solutions – including asset visualisation tools and digital twin platforms – contribute the most to energy efficiency. Companies use them to monitor and optimise their energy consumption, which results in greater efficiency and the more responsible use of natural resources.
Digitalisation also narrows the gap between users with different levels of digital skills. Cybersecurity plays an important role as well, ensuring data protection and strengthening client trust.
COMPREHENSIVE ESG MANAGEMENT
In addition to our own solutions, such as SmartTwin – an IoT and big data platform that collects and processes real-time data on energy sources (electricity, water, gas, and waste), and transforms them into useful indicators – we also provide comprehensive sustainability reporting support. For this, we use IBM’s Envizi platform, which consolidates data from multiple sources and calculates carbon emissions across all three scopes: Scope 1 (direct emissions, e.g. from company vehicles or heating systems), Scope 2 (indirect emissions from electricity, heat and cooling consumption) and Scope 3 (indirect emissions across the entire supply chain, from suppliers to product use). In simple terms, we capture everything: from a company’s own emissions and the electricity it consumes to emissions across its supply chain. Envizi ensures that all data are collected, consolidated and prepared for reporting in line with international standards and regulations.
This allows companies to optimise consumption, reduce costs, and systematically manage their ESG data, thus delivering tangible results in achieving their sustainability objectives. SmartTwin provides precise, real-time operational data from daily business activities, while Envise builds on this information to deliver comprehensive reports and analyses that support decision-making and ensure regulatory compliance. CARBON FOOTPRINT
As a service-based IT company, our carbon footprint is relatively low. We work in certified offices powered by green energy and have modernised our vehicle fleet with electric cars. Remote work also reduces car travel and thus lowers pollution.
We may not be able to spark a major revolution ourselves, but with our solutions we help large-scale energy users reduce their environmental footprints. Digitalisation also makes a difference – less paper, faster decision-making, and more efficient operations.
